Nylon vs Polyester Mesh in Food-Grade Liquid Filtration — Practical Guide for Food Processors

In food manufacturing, the right mesh material makes the difference between consistent product quality and costly contamination or downtime. Nylon (polyamide) and polyester (PET) are the two workhorse polymers used for woven and knitted filtration meshes in food contexts — from powder sieving and liquid filtration to frying and oil filtration. This article compares their properties, common use cases (sieve mesh, liquid filtration mesh, fryer mesh), and practical selection tips so food processors, OEMs, and procurement teams can choose the best fabric for their needs.

Key material differences: nylon vs polyester

Nylon (Polyamide)

  • Strength & flexibility: High tensile strength and good elongation — excellent for tight, durable weaves and knitted tricot meshes.

  • Chemical resistance: Good resistance to many organic solvents, but can be sensitive to strong acids and prolonged alkaline exposure.

  • Temperature: Melting point typically ~215–260°C (varies with grade); good for many processing environments but prolonged high-heat use (e.g., continuous deep frying at high temps) requires careful selection.

  • Surface finish & finishability: Accepts coatings and hydrophilic treatments, useful for wet sieving and liquid filtration where wetting is required.

  • Food safety: Available in food-grade formulations; easily cleaned and sterilized with appropriate protocols.

Polyester (PET)

  • Dimensional stability: Excellent hydrolytic stability and low water absorption — maintains shape and mesh opening in wet environments.

  • Chemical resistance: Better resistance than nylon to acids and common cleaning agents; less prone to hydrolysis.

  • Temperature: Melting point ~250–260°C; shows good performance under intermittent high heat, and many grades are suitable for fryer screens and oil handling.

  • Abrasion resistance: Generally more abrasion-resistant than nylon, which helps in abrasive slurries or repeated handling.

  • Food safety: Widely used in food contact applications and available in food-grade certified variants.

Typical applications in food contexts

1. Sieve mesh for powder sieving (flours, spices, sugar)

Best picks: Nylon or polyester woven meshes with fine, consistent openings.

Why: Consistent aperture control ensures particle size distribution; nylon offers fine weave flexibility for very tight sieves, while polyester gives better dimensional stability in humid environments (e.g., sugar or hygroscopic powders).

2. Mesh for liquid filtration (sauces, syrups, oils, brines)

Best picks: Nylon tricot meshes or polyester woven/knitted meshes depending on viscosity and temperature.

Why: Nylon’s wettability and fine knit make it ideal for clarifying liquids and removing fine particulates; polyester’s chemical and temperature resilience suit acidic sauces or repeated CIP (clean-in-place) cycles.

3. Fryer mesh & oil filtration (deep-fry basket liners, oil strainers)

Best picks: High-tenacity polyester or specially treated nylon with heat-stable grades.

Why: Polyester’s low water absorption and abrasion resistance extend life in hot oil; ensure oil-contact certification and thermal rating.

Specification checklist when purchasing mesh

  • Aperture size (microns / mesh count): Match to target particle size — always specify the d50/d90 target.

  • Open area (%): Higher open area = higher throughput; balance with required retention efficiency.

  • Tensile and burst strength: Important for handling and pressure-filtration conditions.

  • Thickness & GSM: Affects flow and clogging tendency.

  • Finish & treatment: FDA/EC food-grade finish, hydrophilic/hydrophobic coatings, anti-static, or anti-fouling treatments.

  • Temperature & chemical limits: Match with CIP agents, pH, and operating temperature.

  • Certifications: Food-contact approvals, traceability, and batch testing.
